Technology is playing an increasingly important role in both knowledge management and in communities of practice, especially when workers are globally-distributed and face-to-face time is limited. The focus of this paper, however, is not on the practices themselves, but on the social media technologies that may support such communities within organizational settings. Specifically, we discuss the use of blogs, wikis, social bookmarking, and social networking sites in forming, nurturing, and implementing communities of practice toward the goal of improving individual and organizational knowledge management.   More

06-Dec-2005: Using Concept Maps for Learning and Assessment
Concept mapping is a technique for representing knowledge and understanding using graphical maps. While extensive research shows positive learning results, concept mapping is not yet a “staple” instructional strategy in education. This paper explores the theoretical bases for using concept mapping for learning and assessment, and suggests practical applications for using this cognitive technique in K-12 and higher education classrooms.   More
